16 December Vijay Diwas Status

16 December Vijay Diwas Status ?

What is Vijay Diwas? Why December 16 is observed as Vijay Diwas or Victory Day in India and Bangladesh?. The first and foremost reason is that the day commemorates the sacrifices of thousands of people who fought a war that led to the birth of a new nation; Bangladesh.

India pays homage to its brave soldiers who lost their lives in action, while Bangladesh celebrates its independence day. For Bangladesh, it is ‘Bijoy Dibos’.

On 16 December 1971, the Pakistani armed forces surrendered to the joint forces of the Indian Army and Mukti Bahini, the guerrilla resistance movement consisting of the Bangladeshi military, paramilitary and civilians.

India declared victory over Pakistan, after the Commanding officer of the Pakistani Forces Lt.General AAK Niazi surrendered with 93,000 Pakistani troops to the allied forces of India and Bangladesh ending the 13-day long war.

Lt Gen Niazi signed the Instrument of Surrender before the Joint Commander of the Liberation Force Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora in Dhaka. This marked the largest surrender ever after the second World War.

According to reports, the war left Pakistan with 8,000 soldiers dead and 25,000 wounded, while India suffered a casualty of 3000 and injury for 12,000soldiers.
