What is Gramin Dak Sevak?

Gramin Dak Sevak is the Hindi equivalent of Rural Postal Service. The word Garmin Dak Sevak (GDS) is collectively used for the Staff who perform a variety of customer service tasks in the Postal Department. Or a Sevak means a person working as a Gramin Dak Sevak.

According to the Gramin Dak Sevaks (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020, which replaced its predecessor edition of Rules of 2011, a Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) means:

  1. A Branch Postmaster (BPM)
  2. An Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM)
  3. A Dak Sevak
  • However, all GDS other than the Branch Postmaster are designated as Assistant Branch Postmasters (ABPMs)
  • Where as, all GDS other than the Branch Postmaster in Departmental Post offrces, RMS Offices and other offices are designated as Dak Sevaks

What are the duties of a Gramin Dak Sevak

In India, you can find a post office in every nook and corner of its geographical area. Villages having a panchayat, towns, cities are no exceptions. It is estimated that the country has more than 1, 55,015 Post Offices spread across all states and union territories as of March 2017.

In fact, the Indian Postal service connects with the daily lives of a vast population. Through their official assignments, they touch and influence an enormous number of Indian citizens in several ways regularly. The main functions of GDS include:

  • Delivering mails
  • Accepting deposits under Small Savings Schemes
  • Rendering services related to the Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and the Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI)
  • Perfoming tasks such as bill collection, sale of forms, etc.
  • Acting as agents for services for the Government schemes, like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS)

1. Branch Postmaster

The Branch Postmaster is the team leader of the GDS in a Post Office. He or she is responsible for the smooth and timely functioning of the Post Office. This will include mail conveyance and mail delivery as well. Other main functions are the following:

  • Manage the affairs of the GDS Branch Post Office
  • Conduct the fucnctions of the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB)
  • Ensure uninterupted counter operations during the prescibed working hours
  • Deliver enhanced customer service using the handheld device/Smartphone supplied by the Department
  • Management of postal facilities
  • Maintenance of records
  • Preservation of handheld devices, Smartphones, Computers and other devices

2. Assistant Branch Postmaster

The primary duty of an Assist Branch Postmaster is to extend full support and assistance to the Branch Postmaster in conducting the business of a post office. So, an Assist Branch Postmaster’s job profile appears similar to that of a Branch Postmaster. The key functions will include:

  • Sale of stamps and stationery
  • Conveyance and Delivery of mail at doorsteps of the reciepients/ beneficiaries
  • Operations of the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB)
  • Assisting Branch Postmasters in counter duties using the handheld device,Smart phone etc
  • Marketing, organizing melas, busines procurement and any other work assigned by the Branch Postmaster

3.Dak Sevak

A Dak Sevak is required to assist the Postmasters/Sub Postmasters in managing the smooth functioning of Departmental Post Offices. He/has to engage in activities related to marketing, business procurement or any other work assigned by the Postmaster. Other duties include:

How To Become A Gramin Dak Sevak

You can become a Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) if you satisfy the requisite qualifications. The mode of application is online at the official website of the India Post. You have to register your details and log in to access the application form. Pay for the application fee, upload the requisite documents and submit the completed application form. Take a printout of the submitted application form for your reference.

However, you can apply for the post only when a particular Postal circle’s notification is live. There are 23 postal circles in India that issue notifications periodically for staff recruitments. Eligibility Criteria for GDS Posts

Here we are going to discuss the eligibility criteria of posts of Gramin Dak Sevak


The Age limits mentioned below are applicable as on the date of notification of the vacancy.

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Maximum age: 40 years
  • There are Permissible relaxation in upper age Iimits for different categories as prescribed by the government

Upper age Relaxation for Reserved category candidates

There are upper age relaxations for SC/ST/PwD/OBC candidates as well as candidates belonging to other special categories like Government servants, Ex-servicemen etc.

Educational Qualification for Gramin Dak Sevak Posts

For all the approved categories of Gramin Dak Sevaks, viz Branch Postmaster, Assistant Branch Postmaster and Dak Sevak, the educational qualifications must be:

  • Secondary School Examination pass certificate of 10th standard
  • Mathematics and English must be compulsory or elective subjects
  • Compulsory knowledge of local language
  • Must have studied the local language at least up to 10th standard as a compulsory or elective subject
  • Posses the Basic Computer Training certificate of at least 60 days duration issued by a government -approved institute

According to Rule 3-A (vii) of the GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020, the selected candidates shall have a residence in the post village delivery jurisdiction of the Post Office within one month after selection.

The Post Office shall be located in the accommodation to be provided by Gramin Dak Sevak Branch Postmaster suitable for use as Post Office premise.

Krowledge of Cycling

Candidates for any GDS post must have knowledge of cycling. If you know riding a two-wheeler, it may be considered as knowledge of cycling.

Adequate means of Livelihood

As per rule 3-A (iii) of GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020, the selected candidate shall be required to ensure that he/she has other sources of income besides the allowances to be paid by the Government for this job to maintain his livelihood..

A declaration to this effect has to be furnished by the selected candidate within 30 days after selection.

Furnishing of Security

The selected candidate shall be bound to furnish security as prescribed by the government from time to time.

Time-related continuity allowance(TRCA)

The Directorate Order No 17-31/2016-GDS dated 25.06.2018 and letter no. 17-2I2018-GDS dated 22.03.2O19 stipulate the following minimum TRCA to the different categories of GDS posts:

Application Fees

  • Female candidates, all SC/ST candidates and all PwD candidates: No Fees
  • Male applicants belonging to the category UR/OBC/EWS have to pay a fee as prescribed from time to time
  • Fee once paid cannot be refunded

Pension,Gratuity, Severance Amount payable to GDS

Unlike central government employees, the Garmin Dak Sevaks are not entitled to pensions. Instead, they will be paid Gratuity, Severance amount or SDBS as may be decided by the Government from time to time.

SDBS or the Service Discharge Benefit Scheme is the equivalent of the New Pension Scheme for the Central government employees, introduced for GDS in the postal department. All regularly appointed Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) with one year’s satisfactory service are eligible to join the scheme.

The SDBS will be regulated by Pension Fund Regulatory & Development Authority (PFRDA).


The Gramin Dak Sevaks are entitled to paid leave at the rate of 20 days per year (10 days for every half year) without accumulation or as may be determined by the Government, from time to time. They are also eligible for an emergency leave of 5 days every calendar year.
